Training & Needs
Entraînement et besoinsMeet Neo. This sensitive and deeply resilient boy has come a long way, but he will need a very special home that is willing to give him the time, patience, consistency, and understanding he needs to continue healing. Neo knows his name, as well as the “sit” and “crate” commands. He loves his crate and considers it his safe space, and he is an excellent travel companion who is comfortable travelling in his crate.
Neo’s past has had a significant impact on him. He spent most of his puppyhood tied to a garage, which contributed to him developing flat feet. At around six months old, he escaped and lived as a stray for more than six months. He was extremely difficult to catch and could not be trapped despite months of attempts. When he finally came into our care, he had an embedded collar in his neck. With no socialization as a puppy and such a long history of avoiding humans, Neo understandably remains very fearful and suspicious of people, particularly when food is involved. Because of this, traditional food-based training is not an option for him. Interestingly, he will take rollover and table food, but his suspicion around food means it cannot be relied upon as a training tool.
Neo will need an experienced and dedicated adopter who understands that building trust will take time. He needs to work on his confidence and ability to trust humans. His adopter must be prepared for a transition period and multiple meetings before adoption so that Neo can gradually become comfortable with his new person. For this reason, someone located reasonably close to Neo is required and must be able to commit to this process. Training lessons are also offered free of charge through Le Flore Canine to help Neo and his adopter build a strong foundation together.
Once Neo trusts you, you will see a very different side of him. He loves to play, enjoys swimming, and has a natural talent for tracking. While he is not currently suited to competitive work because of his fearfulness, he clearly enjoys using his nose and engaging with his environment. He is also an excellent travel dog and settles very well in his crate.
Neo is best and safest in a home with another stable, reliable dog who can help provide him with confidence and security. He can become a happy, more typical companion once he learns that he is safe and can trust the people around him. However, Neo must never be trusted off leash. His history and high flight risk mean that secure management will always be an important part of his life.
Neo is not a perfect dog, and we cannot promise that his past trauma will ever completely disappear. What we can promise is that we believe he has the potential to continue improving with time, patience, training, and—most importantly—a permanent home where he finally feels safe. Neo deserves someone who will see beyond his fear and give him the chance to discover the dog he can become.
If you are an experienced, patient adopter who is prepared to make a long-term commitment to earning Neo’s trust, respecting his limitations, and celebrating his progress, you may be exactly the person he has been waiting for.
Rencontrez Neo.
